The dreaded 20 miler

I have been dreading this 20 mile training run for about a year.  When I saw a 20 mile run on the training schedule back when I first decided to do a marathon, this run scared the heck out of me.  I have done 7 Half Marathons this year and this 20 mile run would make #8.  But there was no race, no medal, and I had to run for 7 miles more than that.  The furthest I'd gone before this run was 15.5 but 13.1 of that was the Biggest Loser Half Marathon and the rest was the trek to and from my car.  That broke it up a bit and it didn't seem as bad.  And then the 16 miler I was supposed to do, I only made it to 9 because of my calf.  So this was going to be a big deal for me.  I was stressed about it all week and I didn't even do my weekday runs because I was still sore from my Vegas weekend.  (So much walking before and after the races too!)

My first thought was to do it around my house so that I could stop if I needed to, I could use the bathroom at home, grab a snack if need be... And then I thought, that's the problem.  If I can stop whenever I want, I won't finish it.  So I chose the Cedar River Trail.  It's 10 miles out and 10 miles back.  I know that I can make it as far as halfway, and it's a little bit downhill on the way back so I figured this trail would be my best bet.

My husband was going to run it with me but his achilles is still really, really painful from the half marathon.  I guess that's what happens when you go from zero to half marathon in 4 weeks.  I think that means I'm still on my own for the marathon.  So instead of running with me, he rode is bike.  He kept a bag full of gels and goos, and water bottles for me and stayed with me the entire time rolling along at about 4 miles per hour.  And it was FREEZING out.  Literally freezing.  When we got out there the temp said 29 degrees.  I stayed pretty warm because I was running, but slowly biking along, he was so cold.  He's the best husband ever.  I owe him big time.
Best husband ever.
It was so slick out, sometimes I'd walk because I felt my shoes slipping.

I started out ok.  I made it to the halfway point at a pretty good pace considering my foot still hurts.  The calf did really well but the part of my foot that I've been told has a stress fracture was sucking.  Every step hurt.  I had half of a clif bar at the 10 mile mark and I think that was a really bad idea.  My stomach was upset and I was kind of afraid I was gonna lose it every time I started jogging.  And there were no bathrooms or porta-potties for miles.  So I walked, and walked, and walked.  And got cold.  Oh man it was so cold outside!  Especially when I'm covered in sweat.  Brrrrr.  I jogged as much as I could stand.

I'm glad I picked the trail though.  It forced me to keep going.  The road next to it was closed due to downed trees from the windstorm the other day so I didn't even have the option of sending my husband back to the car and coming to my rescue.  Also, there's so many other runners and bikers out there saying good morning and hello the whole way.  It's so motivating.  I'd barely see anyone if I did the run near my house.  One really crazy hardcore runner passed by me a couple times and by the third time he smiled and said, "Great job!"  So nice.

I made it!  20 miles!  My goal was to finish in 5 hours, it took me almost 6.  Even though it was awful,  I have a ton of confidence now that my marathon will go great.  It'll be warm and wonderful, and there's always a billion porta-potties during races.  I'm not worried.  I will not be bringing a clif bar!  I might finish in 7 hours instead of my planned 6, but that's ok.

I'm sore today but not any more than after a half.  I'm going to do my best to get both of my weekday runs in this week, and do yoga at least once, hopefully twice.  And I have the Seattle Half Marathon on Sunday.  And then I have two more 3-4 mile weekday runs, a 6 mile taper run... and then my marathon!  Eeek!  So much less stress now that I'm done with this run though!  :)

VEGAS BABY!

Had an amazing time at the Rock n Roll Half Marathon in Las Vegas!  Husband and I landed on Saturday morning, took a cab to our hotel, dropped off our bags, and went straight to the expo.

Yep.  Kind of a big deal to shut down the strip for 14 hours!

It was huge and amazing and we spent way too much money.  Husband bought a new Garmin watch and new headphones.  I bought some new compression socks, a Vegas Half hoodie, and some casual black Altra shoes that were on clearance and just happened to be my size.  Figure it was meant to be!  After walking around half the day with my cousin, her boyfriend, and new awesome facebook runner friend, we went back to our hotel (it's just right next door) checked in, changed into our running gear, grabbed a quick sandwich while we walked back to the convention center for the Run Through Wedding information meeting.  We were re-assigned corrals for Sunday night's race so that all of the couples being married or re-married ended up at mile 3 at the same time.  And then we started the long walk (longer than we thought) to the 5K start line near the SLS.

Some women behind us at the start corral gave us a beer.  Ha.
Finished!

I just concentrated on my foot and my calf and ran the whole thing.  I don't think I said a word to my husband the entire 5K.  I really didn't enjoy it as much as I usually enjoy a quick fun 5K.  But I was proud that I finished and my foot/calf did a LOT better than I thought they would.  It was a relief and it made me feel better about the half.  After the 5K, we went to Guy Fieri's restaurant to have burgers with cousin and her boyfriend.  Freaking yum.

Sunday we slept in as long as possible, went downstairs for the brunch buffet, and then got dressed for the half.  I KT Taped the heck out of my foot and wore my new compression socks AND my plantar sleeve...

We took the monorail down to the MGM and walked to the start line festival to see Kid Rock play.  It was pretty fun.  He said that this was the healthiest group he's ever performed for!

Cell phone service barely worked down there.  Too many thousands of people all trying to text and call at once I guess so it was impossible to find my cousin, new facebook friend, and cheetah.  But I finally found cheetah!
Me and Cheetah
And I found my cousin in our start corral.  (We gave her a wedding guest wrist band so she could start in our corral)

We found some runaway brides.

Lots of photo opportunities to stop for!

You may kiss the bride... again!
Woo!  Now keep running!
Ooh!  It's the Pawn Stars pawn shop!  We don't need a taxi to get here!  We ran here from Mandalay Bay!

We weren't the only crazy people to pause their run to look around.

Almost back!
Really awesome lights at the finish line.
Done!  3 medals total for the weekend!  5K, Half Marathon, and a "Remix" medal for doing both races!

We spent a lot of the race walking.  My foot hurt, and my husband's heel was killing him.  But we also took a lot of photos, goofed off, and had a lot of fun.

On Monday morning we got up and started doing what you're supposed to do in Vegas.... drink!  (Enough with the healthy Vegas trip already!)  We went to the "5 o'clock somewhere bar" at Margaritaville and ordered margaritas at like 11am and walked around with them.

We booked lunch at Gordon Ramsey's bar and grill and ended up with our own private room to celebrate our weekend!

And all of us for one last awesome photo before heading to the airport.

So this was definitely one of the most fun race weekends ever.  Hope to do it again next year!

Aaaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!

I'm so frustrated.  As soon as I think I have the calf situation sorted out ok, my plantar fasciitis is back.  It's like I've come full circle and I'm back to zero.  I had acupuncture on Tuesday and a massage today.  I've been icing, foam rolling, wearing my plantar sleeve 24/7.  I get on the treadmill at the gym today and my foot kills me and my calf starts acting up again.  I made it .79 of a mile and hit stop.  I have a 5K on Saturday and a Half marathon on Sunday.  Both in Vegas.  What do I do?  My marathon is in 4 weeks and I'm screwed!

Also it's not just the goals that I have and the money I have spent on these races.  I am losing my sanity not being able to run.  It's like when I broke my face and was forced to walk.  I can't handle it.  I need to run or I lose my mind and my anxiety gets worse.

What do I do?  Seriously asking.  Who all out there reads this little blog of mine and has advice for me?  Help!

Injured slacker

A couple of injury updates:

The cortisone shot in my low back to stop the numbness in my right foot was so much easier than I thought it would be.  I chose to skip the sedation and just suck it up and do it.  I don't think it hurt any more than getting an IV.  (I have really crappy veins and they always have trouble though.)  The numbing shot was the worst part, then it just felt kinda weird.  Afterwards my back hurt like I just worked out for... days.  So I sat around and watched TV with some ice.  My foot and calf felt all tingly like they were waking up from being numb for so long.  The next day, my back felt fine... but the numbness was back.  So that was all for nothing I guess.  *sigh*  Worth a try.  I guess I need to call and find out what the next step is.

Then I skipped an entire week of my training schedule due to my torn (I think... google self-diagnosing) calf muscle.  And found this awesome article about how to fix it and tried these "medicinal workouts" all last week and did about half the miles I was supposed to.  (2 instead of 4 on Tuesday/Thursday and 10 instead of 16 on Sunday)  Here's the link to the article:  http://www.runnersworld.com/injury-treatment/calf-heart-attacks

I feel like a total slacker skipping miles on my training schedule but I guess I gotta do what I gotta do to heal properly.  VEGAS is this weekend baby!!!!!!  I want to have an awesome time doing the 5K on Saturday and the 1/2M on Sunday... and renewing my vows with my husband during the "Run Through Wedding".  Sounds so fun.  I need to keep slacking so I can make it through!  I think I'll be okay, it's definitely feeling better but I'm worried about my 20 miler the weekend after Vegas.  That seems soooooo far.

Anyway, I know it's a short update but there you have it.  Here's a couple photos of me finishing the Biggest Loser Half Marathon on a bum calf a couple weeks ago.
